Have you ever wanted to make your own chalkboard art? Today we are sharing Chalkboard Art and how to make a Chalkboard Sign. With the tips, tutorials, and resources I think you can see how easy it is to make your own chalkboard art and signs. We have made signs for our home, parties and to display as decor. To get started we are sharing two chalkboard art designs my daughter created, and chalkboard signs DIY I created, along with all the resources.

Sweet 16 Chalkboard Art – Photo Prop

Do you remember when I previously shared or mentioned doing some chalkboard crafts? I used the same chalkboard pens for Sammie’s Sweet 16 birthday photo prop banner.

I decided to share the leftover craft supplies with my daughter who loves doing crafts too. She has been working on her hand lettering since I shared this book we reviewed (and received for free) with her too. She decided to use the craft supplies I shared with her that I received from Kassa to try out for free.

Supplies you’ll need for today’s chalkboard craft

Purchase a Picture Frame or Upcycle a Picture Frame you have (Or)
Use a Mirror or Framed Mirror
Grab a set of Chalk Pens or White Chalk Markers
You can either make it easy and use Chalkboard Contact Paper

For the first project shown we used the chalkboard contact paper for the second project shown we used blackboard chalk paint.

What’s the difference between the chalkboard contact paper and chalkboard paint backgrounds? The chalkboard contact paper is not as smooth a surface. It has a little tooth to it.

One easy way to create signs is by using a frame or mirror with a frame.

How to make a Chalkboard Sign

Steps for creating a chalkboard sign

Carefully take the frame and glass apart (if possible)
Make sure your frame and glass or mirror is clean and dry
Measure your glass or mirror or roll out the chalkboard contact paper and mark cut lines on the reverse side for cutting
Cut to size
Peel chalkboard contact paper and slowly roll onto surface smoothing it out as you go (stick it to the top of your glass)
Add your frame over and seal tabs on the back of the sign
Lay down your project to draw on it
Layout where your lettering will go (if you can’t draw a straight line visually use a ruler under marking lightly with a chalk pencil or use a YouTube video tutorial for other techniques.(using transfer paper)(using chalk to transfer your lettering design)
Take out your chalkboard markers and create your saying
Let writing dry (clean up areas with a damp lint-free towel) HELPFUL TIP – NOTE: for detail cleaning use a Q-Tip or toothpick with a small amount of paper towel on the end. Use both slightly damp with water, plus ones that are dry.
Hang your chalkboard art in your home

Note: You can always create your writing on the sign before adding your frame on. Make sure the chalk pen writing is entirely dry prior to doing this.

My granddaughter’s favorite thing is mermaids. Her room is in a seashore, mermaid theme. Krissy made her welcome home sign with the mermaid theme. She drew the mermaid free hand but, you can use a mermaid stencil. Using stencils is yet another way to create chalkboard signs.

Birthday Chalkboard Art

For this birthday sign chalkboard painted on a mirror blackboard board chalk paint, and chalk markers were used.

Our honest thoughts on the Kassa products we tried:

They are easy to use. The pens work well but, aren’t my absolute, absolute favorites. (tips I prefer have a chisel vs round edge but, that is a matter of preference) The chalkboard contact paper is awesome for quick and easy projects. Easy to use, and make corrections on. Although I really like the contact paper, it’s convenience and versatility, I do prefer using chalkboard signs or backgrounds with a base of chalk paint. Again this is just my preference I like a totally smooth surface. Try and compare for yourself.

With that said. I love the chalkboard contact paper for making calendars, to add to walls, great for playrooms, quick 1st day of school signs, and whatever you can think of!
