There is nothing worse than when you get that dreaded call from the school nurse saying your child is sick. That’s when #SickJustGotReal or maybe you were woken up in the middle of the night to a crying little one? As a parent we have all been there. We dread those moments, at least I do. Today we are sharing ways that have worked for us to comfort a sick child plus a reader giveaway at the end of the post.
We play nurse, comfort and ease our sick kids back to sleep. When we can’t seem to get them to settle back down, we reach for medicines to ease their cold symptoms. If they are old enough and it’s daytime we grab a movie to play so they can rest in the day and keep their mind off their illness. Hopefully they will find comfort and rest.

Recently I received the call from Sam’s high school I knew her cold had her too uncomfortable to be at school. But, she insisted she try because she had a test. Low and behold she didn’t make it to that class. I headed down to pick her up and got her home.
6 Ways to help make kids feel comfortable when they are sick;
- getting a few pillows and their favorite blanket
- have their chest and head higher when laying them down
- setting up a comfy space on the couch (or bed) and sitting nearby or grabbing their favorite stuffed toy or pet
- popping in a favorite movie (such as Sandlot, The Peanut’s Movie, Ice Age Collision Course)
- making an herbal tea or using a humidifier to help steam their air passages
- giving them a children’s medicine to ease their symptoms, as needed (*always follow directions on the package and consult a doctor as needed)
I always hate seeing any of my kids or grand kids and grand babies sick. It just breaks my heart. But, I’ve learned over the years how to care for them. And when to reach for needed medicines. Or when to make the call to the doctors or advice nurse.
These are some of my go to medicines I’ve used over the years:
