DIY Pencil Case

When my grandkids were here, I sewed pencil cases, cosmetic bags, and zipper pouches with them. I’m finally sharing our sewing projects.

I thought I’d share the finished projects and a few sewing tutorials, tips, and resources to help you make your own! Take advantage of spring break, summer break, sewing in the fall and winter breaks to teach kids and teens sewing! Or use your downtime to learn to sew!

Why learn to sew?

No matter what age you are; sewing is a great skill to have! And a handicraft that opens the door to creativity!

Sewing allows for a high degree of creative expression. Sewists can choose fabrics, patterns, and embellishments to create unique and personalized items. This blending of skill and creativity firmly places sewing within the realm of craft.

My granddaughters love the fabric zipper cases. They use them for pencil cases for school and little things. And my older granddaughter uses her pouches for makeup bags holding personal care items, and cosmetic items.

Beginner Sewing Projects

They enjoyed helping make them. I gave them sewing tasks for their skill level. Doing this sparks their interest in learning how to sew.

Below I have a few resources and sewing classes that will help you too! Do you need a sewing machine? Shop Brother sewing machines or other brands at great prices!

Note ironing the fabric before starting is very important!

Ironing seams down, and ironing the project if boxing the corners is important. Reference the video to see how this is done. Do not use specialty fabrics, silky fabrics, or other hard-to-work-with fabrics if you are new to sewing. The best fabrics to use are cotton fabric, cotton canvas, or muslin. These will be the best fabrics for beginners.

  3. Lay the right side fabric face down, and place the lining on top. Then iron back a seam (do this twice) Now, with the right side fabric face down on a table pin (or hand baste) your zipper to each side in place. (zipper pull facing down to the table) NOTE: if you are using interfacing or iron-on interfacing add it to the back of the outside zipper case fabric pieces, prior to adding the inside fabric.
  4. When you flip it over it should look like this image (image with steps). Then sew your zipper into place.
  5. Pull open the zipper slightly, fold the fabric in half right sides together, and pin and sew around all sides meeting the zipper area that is already sewn. (this is why you need the zipper slightly open) Now turn it inside out. Check sewing, clip edges, and the corners.
  6. To create a boxed bottom fold corner as shown and pin.

Note: It is good to use fusible interfacing or lightweight heatnbond like this. Both products are iron-on so adding it prior to sewing is easy! You can stabilize the light cotton fabric. You cut 2 pieces and iron each piece to the wrong side of the outside of the outer pouch fabric (this is the cut fabric you see on the finished project).

Customize Your Sewing Designs

Personalizing your makeup bag is easy and fun! You have several options: create a cohesive design by using the same fabric for both the interior and exterior, or express your style by pairing coordinating fabrics with different patterns and colors. When it comes to zippers, consider using ring zippers for added convenience, or opt for traditional zippers. With these choices, you can design a makeup bag that truly reflects your “individual” taste.

What Size To Make a Makeup Bag?

9.85 inches x 6.70 inches – 25 cm x 17 cm or adjust to the rectangle size you would like. Or make your own preferred size.

  • I like making my cosmetic cases and makeup bags a little bigger.
  • Once you make one or two you can easily adjust the size to the size you like.
  • Or take your favorite pouch or cosmetic bag, and measure it. Then add a few inches on each side to allow for sewing allowances.
